Future of Media #80 Get Out Your Crystal Ball

1. When it comes to delivering entertainment, computers and TV will become interchangeable. It's happened in my own life...after the switch to digital my TV reception was zilch so bought a new computer. Now I'm happily watching The Daily Show, a few weeks old but still funny.

And according to Vudu's website "VUDU box and service deliver instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows directly through the television, without requiring a computer or cable/satellite TV service."

2. I'm not an early adapter to technology. I have to wait until the price comes down.

The thing I miss the most about old technology is simplicity. Used to be when you bought a phone, a TV or a camera, you pulled it out of the box and it was ready to go. Now we need a computer programmer and a teenager to get this stuff up and running and weeks of practice to learn how to use it.

Future of Media #80 Movies

1. Yes, I would watch an entire film on my computer. Since my previous post I've bought a new laptop with decent memory and the stops and starts of streaming are tolerable. The quality of the picture is sometimes grainy though, and if given a choice I'd rather watch a DVD.

2. I wouldn't watch trailers to keep up with films. I'd rather read reviews and hear what friends have to say.

Auteur looked great. I like artsy foreign films...may watch one this weekend. I'm becoming a regular user of Hulu. I had a hard time finding a full-length film in IMBD but it had lots of information.

3. I probably won't pay to watch movies on my computer. There's enough free stuff online and DVD's at the library. I'd rather spend my movie dollars at a theater.

Future of Media #79 Television

1. Hulu offers The Colbert Report, full episodes available for 30 days after the original episode and Family Guy, five trailing episodes from the current season.

2. I have a minimalist cell phone that is only good for voice and texting. I don't think I would watch TV on a phone, the screen is too small.

3. There are no streaming programs nor channels in my life. My high-tech devices consist of an electric can opener and a 7-year-old PC connected to the slowest DSL. Watching video is a painful series of long, lingering pauses, like a conversation with a dozing old person.

I did post a video in my blog once, way back when ihcpl began but haven't done it since.

Searching #75 Google and Beyond

1. After four queries Google won twice, Yahoo won twice and zero for Bing. The search results were similar so it was hard to choose a favorite. I'll stick with Google in the future because it's familiar and comfortable, like my fuzzy blue slippers.

2. Google was #1 on Hitwise for January 9, with 71% share. Yahoo had a measly 14% and Bing only 7%.

3. Continuing in my rut, I explored Google's features and discovered if you type "define" before a word it will give you the definition. If you enter a math problem Google will turn itself into a calculator and give you the answer. It has a decent translator. Google Docs will process your words, store them and allow others to edit and collaborate. Google Read lets you to choose the news you want to read each day. It really is quite amazing.

Maps #34: Geocoding and Geocaching

1. I entered the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Lake Robbins Drive and got the following coordinates: 30.161367, -95.46375 N30°9.68202, W095°27.825

2. I'd like to search for the cache at: http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx?lat=30.132983&lon=-95.705967
'cause it's near my house.

3. Geocaching sounds like fun...snooping in the woods is my idea of a good time. The problem is, I'm not willing to spring for the GPS thingy. As for dangers, those who posted comments complained of snake, mosquito and mud encounters.

#33 MAPS

Activity 1

I tried all three apartment sites and found Apartment Guider to be the best. I was able to pop in the zip code and it brought up three complexes that the other two sights didn't find. My favorite allowed large pets so I can bring my donkey.

As far as views, I love the satellite view. It is such fun to zoom in and see treetops and cars. Do birds appreciate this?

Activity 2

I found Spring Creek Apartments which is within walking distance of Tomball College. According to Walk Score there are lots of places nearby...restaurants, churches, schools. However, looking at the satellite view you can see that you'd have to cross a six lane highway to reach most of these.

Apartment Guider, Google Maps and Walk Maps were helpful and user friendly. I would recommend these to someone who is apartment hunting.
